What is in a name -- "Keystones"?
A Keystone is the center stone of an arch that determines whether the structure is stable and viable
Each Business platform rests, for its stability on many arches. Each of these has a Keystone skill and group of functions that determine whether the arch will stand, and bear the stresses of dynamic changes coming at the business from internal and external forces.
If the keystones are strong, the arches will hold firm and the business will withstand its dynamic environment. The business will strengthen, grow, and if the products find their expected markets, it will succeed. If not, precious time and significant resources will be spent to make mid-course repairs to or rebuilding of these essential functions.
These keystones are often urgently needed at the most inopportune times along the journey of the business and if they are not firmly in place when the foundation of the business is built, the foundation may give way under stress and the business may fail.
(An analogy: Some refer to these same business functions as "boilerplate functions." Boilerplate, of course, is the critical source of strength of a steam boiler without which the boiler will explode.)
